Designed to repair teeth that have become damaged as a result of either decay or injury, inlays and onlays perform the same function, but are used in different ways. At Deansgate Dental Studio, we’re able to produce these restorations on the day and in-practice, with our state-of-the-art Cerec PrimeMill machine.
An inlay is similar to a filling, in that it can be used to fill a gap or cavity in a tooth. Designed to sit inside the tooth, they can be used in situations where a simple filling wouldn’t be sufficient, for example where a filling has failed, or where the surface area of the tooth is too large. This means that they are often used on the teeth towards the back of the mouth.
Unlike an inlay, onlays are designed to cover the cusp of the tooth, and are used in situations where otherwise, a crown might be used. They require less of the natural tooth to be removed in order to be placed, however, and therefore offer a much more minimally-invasive option. They are designed to fit in with the rest of the mouth, fitting in almost seamlessly, and can help support the natural tooth for years to come.
Inlays and onlays are usually made in a dental laboratory and then applied here at the practice. This means they require two or more visits to be placed. At the first appointment, we’ll prepare the tooth or teeth for treatment and take digital images or impressions which will be used to make your inlay or onlay. Once made, you’ll come back into the practice to have them placed. If you have chosen to receive your inlay or onlay with our Cerec machine, your restoration will be made in-practice and on the same day, meaning you can go home with a brand-new, working smile later that same day.
